(formerly WOCAR) by ScanStore is a freeware Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) program to scan that paper document into editable
electronic text for use in any application including Word and WordPerfect.
Processes documents in both English or French.

Dictionary - Over 120,000 words. In the rare event it runs into an
unfamiliar word, the improved text editor allows you to easily add the
new word to the dictionary. By adding new words, SimpleOCR becomes
better with every use.
Despeckle
- For those documents not particularly clear (i.e. faxes, copies of copies,
...), SimpleOCR provides a despeckle or "noisy document" option to further
increase its accuracy.
Format
Retention - Keep elements of the document's format ... from varying
font sizes to font formatting elements such as underline, italic, and bold.
Image
Retention - Retain pictures from the original document. SimpleOCR
supports color and grayscale images.
Plain
Text Extraction - SimpleOCR can recognize the characters and words
but ignore the formatting. The resulting file is ready for customization.
Simplified
Error Correction - Highlights suspected errors for easier correction
to simplify time-consuming proof reading. But with 99% accuracy,
it may never be used.
Batch
OCR - Several documents to OCR? Just point and OCR them from
start to finish.
Zone
OCR - Sometimes all you need is to extract the text from a certain
area in a document. Perhaps just a paragraph, a column or a footnote.
Unlike other OCR applications, SimpleOCR can limit its ability to a user
defined area. There is no need to OCR an entire document.
Input
/ Output Formats - Accepts input from TIFF, BMP and JPG image files.
Outputs Text Formats into TXT and RTF, importable into every word processing
program; such as Word, WordPerfect, and e-mail programs, either fully formatted
or as plain text. Additionally, it can save scanned documents in
the industry standard TIFF format, a format as widely accepted as PDF files.
Multiple
Language Recognition - Supports English and French recognition and
is in the process of adding additional languages.
